Getting Your First Tattoo in Phoenix: A Beginner's Guide

Most of the clients at InkRiver Tattoo are getting their first or second tattoo. If that's you, here's everything you actually need to know — no gatekeeping, no judgment.

Step 1: Start with the feeling, not the picture

You don't need to arrive with a finished design. Start with what you want it to feel like: delicate or bold? Spiritual? Minimal? A memorial? Bring reference images, moods, even Pinterest boards. A good artist translates that into a design — that's literally the job.

Step 2: Choose the artist before the shop

For fine line and delicate work especially, the individual artist matters more than the shop's name. Look for: healed photos in the style you want; work placed on body parts similar to yours; an artist who asks questions and pushes back on bad ideas (sizing, placement).

Step 3: Placement and pain — the honest version

Pain is real but manageable, and it's wildly placement-dependent. As a rough guide, from least to most sensitive: outer arm and thigh → forearm and calf → shoulder → wrist and ankle → ribs, sternum, and spine → hands, feet, and neck. For a first tattoo, the outer forearm or upper arm is the classic recommendation: easy to sit for, easy to show or cover, and the skin takes ink beautifully.

Step 4: The consultation

A consultation should be free, unrushed, and honest. Expect to discuss: your idea and references; size and placement (with the artist's honest input); a clear price estimate; timing and booking. If you feel rushed or pressured at a consult, that's your answer about the studio.

Step 5: Session day

Eat a real meal. Hydrate. Don't drink alcohol the night before (it thins the blood). Bring headphones if you want them. The first 15 minutes are the hardest — then adrenaline and endorphins do their thing, and most people say "that was it?"

Step 6: Aftercare (the part people skip)

  • Keep the wrap on as instructed (usually a few hours to a day)
  • Wash gently, moisturize lightly, don't overdo either
  • No sun, no swimming, no soaking for 2 weeks
  • Don't pick at peeling — let it flake naturally

You'll get written aftercare instructions after your session. Follow them; most "bad healing" is bad aftercare.

Why first-timers choose InkRiver Tattoo

It's a private studio — one artist, one client, no audience. The consultation is free, the pace is calm, and there's no question too basic to ask. A lot of first-timers say the private setting is what made them finally book.
